Crochet From The Beginning Day #2

First off I would like to say Hi to all of my student. Hope everyone is well and ready to learn.

I would like to thank, Jeaneen, Dorthea, Margaret, Teri and Aime for their posts/homework assignments. I really appreciate your participation.

YARN WEIGHT

In this lesson we will be learning all about yarn and crochet hooks, and I will be giving another homework assignment at the end.

Let’s begin with yarn weights:

PDF-Course-1

The above is a Yarn Weight Chart. This chart list all of the weight/thickness of every type of yarn on the market today. You have probably use some or all of these weights in your craft projects (crochet, knitting, other yarn crafts), and some of them you like better than others. As for myself I use #3 & #4, mostly.

When I first started out 45 years ago (and I could get my hands on yarn) I used #0, which is more of a thread than a yarn. I used to make doilies, tablecloths, runners, baby hats/clothing, and this is what I used. Today I like using the #4, which is a 4-ply, Worsted Weight, Afghan Yarn.

You will find the numbers in the chart on the labels of all yarns in the store, that’s how you tell which yarn you are looking for, and the thickness of the yarn/the weight of it.

For now we will be concentrating on #4.

The yarn on the market today comes in a wide variety of colors and the sky’s the limit on what you can create if you know what you’re doing, and that’s where this course comes in, but first you need to learn the basics…….

HOOKS

PDF-Course-2

The above photos collage shows the different types of Crochet Hooks. They come in basically 5 different types: Aluminum (my favorite), Bone, Plastic, Wood and Steel.

The following is a list of all the Crochet Hook Sizes, on the market:

B-1……………………2.25mm

C-2……………………2.75mm

D-3……………………3.25mm

E-4……………………3.5mm

F-5…………………….3.75mm

G-6…………………….4mm

H-6……………………..5mm

J-9………………………5.5mm

K-10.5…………………6.5mm

**WE WILL NOT BE USING THE FOLLOWING HOOK SIZES IN THIS COURSE.***

L-11…………………….8mm

M/N-13………………..9mm

N/P-15………………..10mm

P/Q…………………….15mm

Q……………………….16mm

S………………………..19mm

For now we will be concentrating on the H-8 (5mm) Crochet Hook, which corresponds with 4-ply yarn.

HOMEWORK

Between now and our next lesson (Jul.21st, Sunday), I’d like you to go to your local craft store/Department Store and find 4-ply yarn and an H-8 crochet hook.

Feel the different types of 4-ply yarn (#4) and the different types of H-8 crochet hooks (plastic, bone, wood, and aluminum); the H-8 hook doesn’t come in Steel. Then I want you to write down the Brand Name & Color of the yarn you like the best (please do not choose a mixed or dark color yarn. Choose a medium or light color yarn). Choose a H-8 crochet hook that you like the best (be sure to feel it and hold it). Then write the information down on a piece of paper (if you can buy these items then please do so, because you will be needing them in the near future).

After you have all the info, I want you to come back here and tell me what you like. Just list the info in the comment box.

The point of his assignment is to see what feels comfortable to you and to see what you like the best. It’s important that you’re comfortable with the tools of this craft, before you begin to use them, so take your time and get familiar with them. It’s also to prepare you for our first crochet assignment, which will be coming in the fourth lesson.

*If you are a crocheter, tell me what’s your favorite 4-ply yarn and your favorite H-8 Crochet Hook type.*

Thanks You, for your participation.

**I hope to see more students participating before our next lesson begins.**
