Chickie Magoo in her own words……..

Chickie MagooI’m 58 years old, born in Germany but have lived in Australia since I was 6 years old. My mother was an avid crocheter and knitter, making the most elaborate patterns I’ve ever seen, she was so patient with them. I could never follow intricate patterns like she could, I mean, I could but I just didn’t want to.

I love the rhythm, the cadence, the peace and familiarity of being able to steadily crochet or knit along without having to concentrate 100% all the time and still be able to cast on for knitting using the thumb method at the age of four. Mother use to haunt the local yarn shops and I use to be propped upon the counter while she and the store owner chattered and deliberated over yarns and patterns. The owners daughter, asked me one day, and I remember it clear as day, if I would like to learn to knit and crochet too? I jumped at it! Knitting came first, on round needles, both of which were held in the European way like a butter knife. I practiced all the time. Mother didn’t help at all, all my teaching and advice came from the yarn shop owners daughter. Subsequent trips to the store would be used for further learning, corrections and then lastly to learn crochet. Oh my…..I fell in love!!! Not only was it easy, it was so quick and I could see my crochet piece growing by the minute! I swanned around with my crochet necklaces (chains) proudly made by me, bit of crochet in my long hair…… it was bliss…..and it still is, all these years later.

Now it’s my turn to teach my only daughter and the tradition goes on!
